Application Guide

Preparation: Make sure all surfaces are sound, clean and dry. For best results, sand surfaces and use a wood preservative and/or knotting solution if required. Thorndown Shed Paint is self-priming but if you’re applying to an oily hardwood, metal or uPVC a primer is recommended. To avoid possible resin bleed or tannin stains from discolouring the coating apply the ‘Stain-blocking primer’ prior to painting.

Dilution: If you want a wash or wood stain effect (instead of paint), dilute with water up to 1:1 (50%). For full protection, you can then use an undiluted top coat of ‘UV Clear’ Wood Paint.

Application: Mix paint thoroughly before and during – best Shaken & Stirred! Use a brush, roller, or sprayer. ‘Avoid the rain, and apply with the grain’, as they say, and leave to dry. When coating large areas, paint up to still-wet paint, as applying over dry paint can make things look uneven and patchy.

Coverage: On average, 1 litre will cover 6-12m² per coat. Rough sawn surfaces will take a lot more paint than a smooth surface, and second coats take less than the first. So each paint can will do approximately:

  • 150ml: 0.9m² – 1.8m²
  • 750ml: 4.5m² – 9.0m²
  • 2.5L: 15m² – 30m²

One coat can do the trick, but additional coats will offer greater protection and enhance colour. We always recommend at least two coats for protecting timber from water, the weather or regular use such as floors & decks.

Drying Time: In fine weather, a single coat dries easily in under an hour or two at 20°C with low humidity, however it will take longer in cold or damp. To slow down the drying process, add a little water.

Cleaning Up: Use hot or cold water, with or without detergent, on paint-wet equipment. Be very careful not to allow sprayer nozzles to dry out – this will make cleaning them almost impossible!

Disposal: Please don’t throw away unused or dried paint or preserver into drains or watercourses. Most local authorities have free facilities for disposing of paint.

Returns: We are happy for you to return any unused paint/preservative if surplus to requirements (within 14 days of delivery), although we are unable to refund your return carriage costs. Please contact us prior to returning your paint as we cannot accept unauthorised returns. A re-stocking charge of £3.99 per tin will apply on standard colours, and will be deducted from your refund. Please note that we cannot accept returns for specially mixed (RAL colours) under any circumstances, therefore please ensure that you order the correct colour/quantity for your needs.

Note

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and so is colour. We all see and interpret colour slightly differently to each other, as do our VDU screens, software and printers that we use. The colour swatches you see on screen and on a printed colour chart are designed as a guide.

The exact and final colour you paint up at home will look slightly different depending on the material you paint it onto and the lighting. For example a colour painted onto new softwood will look slightly different if painted on old hardwood. If you paint up a wooden planter the colour will look different depending on the lighting and where you put it in the garden.

We always recommend trying a small tin of Thorndown Shed Paint at home, where it’s going to end up. Our colours are made precisely using a technically engineered colour system ensuring continuity of colour throughout batches.
